Current U.S. Army standard-issue backup rear sight for M4 carbines and M16A4 rifles flips up instantly at the touch of your thumb when primary sight fails or tactical situation makes iron sights preferable. Designed in conjunction with Picatinny Arsenal engineering staff and rigorously tested at Fort Benning and Aberdeen Proving Ground for robustness, ease of use, and effective targeting out to 600 meters. Detent-locking lever lets you quickly switch to one of eight range settings: 200, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 meters. Adjust windage easily with grooved, A2-style windage knob and position markers on the back of the sight for repeatability of settings. Bright, white, laser etched numbers and markers are clearly visible even in low light. Rugged machined steel construction ensures sight retains zero even under heavy, full-auto fire. Clamps securely to the rearmost slot of MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny or Weaver-style accessory rail on flattop receiver via simple but strong locking bar and bolt. Rounded corners and beveled edges further reduce danger of snagging on other gear when sight post is down. Regulates correctly with A2 front sight on any AR-15-style rifle or carbine; instructions included for adjusting front sight post height to set exact zero. Works great and is right on the money (04/12/2009)

Mount and set to 200 yards or meters and adjust the front sight for point of impact. True adjustments out to 600 yds/meters with standard 20 barrel. Simple/strong/works. Neg. cost to much.

Distance lever is easily moved when bumped. Saw many that would not stay down anymore.

Very good sight, I purchased this sight just to try it out and to say the least it grew on me. It looks funky but works great. If you get an eye for the smaller rear apeture your accuracy will improve even at short range. Works great with red dot sights as a backup.

Overall good sight (23/11/2010)

Have used these in military and on personal guns. Military use over time it allowed "play" and movement of the rear sight aperture. Not a good situation for accuracy, but it's a "backup" after all.

For personal use they are great. A little on the heavy side but very durable, steel and adjustable. Also flat enough when folded to work with an ACOG or M68.

Don't use with burst or full auto fire (14/03/2012)

We used these in my unit when I was with USAF Security Forces. Under burst fire, we had a noticible percentage (5% approx)have problems. The problem was the pin that the rear sight pivots on "walks" out to the right, giving the shooter a complete fail in accuracy. We thought it was the shooter, but after several of us Instructors shot the rifle-and had the same result, we looked closer. That's when we found the pin problem.

BUIS (17/12/2012)

I am unsure of how the people maintained the weapon systems they placed this BUIS on, however, I have used them for the past seven years without issue. Further, I have not seen a single Soldier have issues with them. I am an infantrymen, so, we spend a large amount of time performing weapons maintenance. I have never had one have a "pin" come loose during either of my tours of Iraq or Afghanistan with weapons fired on both burst and semi. Nor have I had one fail to lock back down after use. I use one on my personal owned DPMS as well.

Inspires Confidence (25/07/2013)

For those who were brought up with, and used iron sights for half their adult life before moving to optics, this sight really in 2nd to none. It can stand its ground as the primary sight too because once the weapon is properly zeroed, the range marking can be trusted. Just dial up or down to suit.

Lowest profile BUIS that i am aware of (10/01/2014)

This sight folds down to almost nothing.

I have had a lot of BUIS come and go. All where and still are very good.

This one is just lower profile.

This is not the sight i would choose for match rifle shooting. It is also not designed to do that. I was designed to be small, lightweight, low profile and tough.

It is all of those things.

Solid (02/02/2014)

No problems with this guy. I had one a while back which had a spring problem...the sight wouldnt stay down in the "locked" position. Other than that Ive seen dozens of these things on issued M4's take a serious beating and do just fine. Like someone else said-this is not a match sight. Its a back up for a combat weapon. I can hit the 300m target on the pop up range all day with this sight.

A MUST HAVE! (23/07/2017)

If you owned this product in the past and experienced walking pins and stripping... You unfortunately bought a generic clone. If it's the real deal, you'll notice it's rather expensive.

I love this sight. Very solid and locks down tight. Nice low profile in it's stowed positron. It'll never fail on you. This will survive WWIII and beyond. No gimmick or fancy features. Just robust, solid, true performance. My matech came with the picatinny logo and their name Laser etched on the right side by the windage knob.

I own four of these, now. Years ago, I wanted to recreate my USAF M-4 as closely as I could (without a tax stamp), and found that this MATECH was my issued rear sight.

If you are a stickler for mil-spec or nostalgic about your issued rifle, this is your BUIS! And, it's perfectly serviceable: precisely calibrated at carbine and rifle sight radii for an A2 front tower and M855 ammo, and of course works well enough with other bullet weights and rail mount front sights at varying radii. Installs easily, usually fits underneath lower 1/3 optics, fairly sturdy, snaps open with authority and closes positively.

Downside? Cost for performance ratio. You pay for all of that intricate white lettering and precision machined elevation cam, etc. So, you can get a modern polymer sight for 1/4 the price, and a simpler, more rugged premium brand steel sight for 2/3 the price. Plus, you may want to have modern rifle aesthetics with matching front and rear BUIS. But, if you like the milspec look, splurge on this quality item and you aren't giving up any performance, and even gain the ability to BDC your ball rounds if you take time to follow the sight in instructions and match the GI sight radius.
